Who is Jem?
Jem is a South African artist, marine biologist, and surfer. Born into a lineage of South African painters and sculptors, Jem was raised to view the world through a creative lens. That artistic upbringing subsequently collided with the scientific world of Marine Biology and a lifelong obsession with the surf, creating the inspiration for her work.
Her surf art designs distil snapshots of surf culture – combining its unique history, ridiculous jargon and drive for exploration. The collaboration work with KISS is a location piece with the iconic Table Mountain in the backdrop and the peeling waves you cross-fingers to see when pulling into the Table View parking lot.
KISS – Keep It Simple Surf
“Branderplankry Winkel” is the Afrikaans term for surf store — and KISS – Keep It Simple Surf in Cape Town is a fine example of exactly that.
